Phone batteries have been stagnant for a while now, and with AI becoming more popular, the need for larger batteries becomes even more important to provide the extra juice for AI to keep running in background.
Traditionally, battery development has been pretty slow and gradual. Taking years just to increase the capacity by less than 15%. In the recent years however, since 2020, battery R&D has skyrocketed partly thanks to the EV push.
We've had 5000mah batteries in mainstream phones since 2020, and its 2024 now. After 4 years, we're finally getting some flagship phones like the Honor magic 6 pro, Vivo x100 ultra, and oneplus 12, with battery capacity ranging from 5400-5600mah. In the mid range segment we're already seeing 5500mah batteries in many phones, its only a matter of time until they reach all mainstream flagships. All of this thanks to the silicon-carbon battery composition, which allows to increase density without increasing battery thickness significantly.
By 2025, we'll see flagships without compromise have 5500-6100mah batteries.
However, this is not just for the sake of longer battery life. With the increase in on-device AI features, the need for more power naturally increases. Running constant AI applications and assistants 24/7 in the background requires a good amount of battery.
So starting from 8 gen4 and dimensity 9400 series, the power consumption of these flagship chips will increase to run AI tasks on-device. Therefore, larger batteries such as 5500 or 6000mah will be really helpful in maintaining good battery and for providing the power to these new chips.
We will have phones like Honor magic 7 pro, Vivo x200 series, Xiaomi 15 series, Oppo find X8 series, Huawei 2025 flagships, and maybe even Samsung. Although going by the leaks, Samsung's s25 series is leaked to carry forward the same 5000mah battery capacity.
